SkipSations’ Successful Summer Leads To Fall Classes

The Chapel Hill-based SkipSations! are hosting instructional meetings this fall for youngsters who are interested in learning about competitive rope-jumping. The sessions, open to beginners through advanced jumpers (ages 5 to 14 years old) , meet from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at McDougle Elementary School.

The SkipSations competitive team practices include and follow the instructional club sessions.

The SkipSations are coming off a productive summer, which ended with the 23-member team earning tournament trophies in Orlando, Fla., and Iowa, and they also performed closer to home in Concord.

SkipSations coach, Lucy Schimmelfing led the team to the fourth annual World Jump Rope Championship in Florida, where the group medaled multiple times in team and individual events. Jumpers who ranked in the top six for each event qualified to advance to the Grand Championship for which 10 SkipSations qualified: Dorian Alexis, Anya Cocowitch, Kamrin Dean, Chloe Grill, Megan Miller, Sam Orenstein, Cinthia Praiswater, Gabby Porco, Sarah Seagroves, and Zac Tomlinson.

Other SkipSations! jumpers competing at Orlando's WJR Championship tournament were: Isabel Balderson, Lindsey Birkemo, Julia Charney, Allison Haines, Cole LeMoine, Sydney Melet, Mackenzie Ridlon, Jessica Schinsky, Brooke Shoup and Julia Sonis.

Following the WJR, six team members had the unique opportunity to perform over a four-day period in a jump-rope competition scene for a movie being filmed in Concord. That included: Dean, Orenstein, Praiswater, Shoup, Schinsky and Birkemo.

"Even though they practiced and performed for long hours every day, the jumpers were elated to have this experience and meet new people while sharing their talent in this exciting and different way," Schimmelfing said.
